food literacy appeal
A big THANK YOU to all those who have contributed to this appeal. We have recently emptied our Melbourne storage and sent box loads of books to the Victorian bushfire victims via the Whittlesea Library service (bless them). During Nov/Dec we will be in our Sydney shed sorting so if anyone would like to help, please contact us....
Media Release
From 1 March 2009 all donations of food literature will be distributed to schools, communities and families affected by the recent natural disasters in Australia.
The horrendous impact of the Victorian Bushfires is so immense every little bit of kindness and generosity will make a difference. Also recent floods have devastated many in QLD and NSW.
Losing a favourite cookbook, gardening book or food magazine may not seem important when compared to the loss of a loved one, a home or a livelihood, but we know the simple acts of growing food, cooking and eating a meal together will serve to heal in their own special way.
We plan to aid the disaster relief by replacing food related books and magazines with either second-hand or new literature. Kennards are supporting us with free storage in Melbourne and Sydney so we can wait and deliver to communities when they are finally back in their vegetable plots and kitchens.
Thanks to the generosity of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, ArtPlay and City of Melbourne you can deliver your donations during festival events as follows:
- Sat 14Mar "Connex Sizzle!” near the Global Chargrill BBQ stage 12–5pm
- Sun 15Mar “Wicked Sunday” at the info tent on Fed Square 12–4pm
- Fri 20Mar ArtPlay, Birrarung Marr (behind Fed Square) 10am–12pm
- Sat 21Mar ArtPlay, Birrarung Marr (behind Fed Square) 9am–3pm
If you can’t make it to the above locations, donations can also be dropped off at
these Kennards locations from 16th March until further notice.
- Kennards Storage, 159 Racecourse Road (enter via Stubbs St), Flemington
- Kennards Storage, 1-7 Mann Street, Chatswood
We will accept any sort of recipe books, cookbooks, food magazines, food texts, food pictures, DVDs, CDs or food-related stories (like for instance Dr Seuss “Green Eggs & Ham”).
Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your work colleagues and organise a centralised storage point - if you end up with a shedload - we will collect.
Or, buy some food literature online and have it delivered direct to us at Children’s Food Education Foundation PO Box 137 Benalla VIC 3671.
